Welcome to the last Weekly Update of 2024. We like to take this opportunity to wish you seasons greetings, whatever you are doing at this festive time we hope you have a wonderful break! We are looking forward to seeing you in 2025!
Please read on for information for people that may be on their own at Christmas as well as, food banks and financial support. We know this time of year is not easy for everyone!
Please note we will be closed for the Christmas holidays from 20th December until the 6th January and will not be able to respond to calls or emails during this period.
This is a chance for our hard working team to put their feet up and take a break! Which as we know is all part of looking after our wellbeing!

We are planning events for all our learners in 2025 to connect in different venues across Calderdale and Kirklees.
This will be a drop in session for you to chat with staff, meet new people and be part of celebrating 10 years of the Recovery and Wellbeing College.

Handmade Doodle Books
Project Colt, Elland, Halifax, Bridgefield Mills, Elland Bridge, Elland, Halifax HX5 0SQ – Monday 13 January 2025 1.30pm – 3.30pm 5 weeks
Join us for a fun and engaging 5-week course that combines creativity, self-expression, and mindfulness through the art of simple handmade doodle books. You will have the opportunity to make your own simple books, experiment with different media and create a collection of your very own doodle books that can be used in your own time or even given to someone as a gift. This course is designed for anyone looking to explore their artistic side while supporting their health and well-being in a relaxed and supportive, no pressure environment.
Creative Mandalas
Project Colt, Elland, Halifax, Bridgefield Mills, Elland Bridge, Elland, Halifax HX5 0SQ – Monday 13 January 2025 10:00am-12:00pm 5 weeks
Explore the expressive art of mandala-making in this 5-week course designed to nurture your creativity and support your well-being. Guided by a gentle, friendly approach, you’ll experiment with stencils, collage, clay work, and mark-making to create intricate, layered mandalas that reflect your own unique style. This course is designed for anyone looking to explore their artistic side while supporting their health and well-being in a relaxed and supportive, no pressure environment.
Printed Pages: Gel Printing & Book Making for Carers
Empire House -Dewsbury, Wakefield Road, Dewsbury, WF12 8DJ – Monday 13 January 2025 1pm – 3pm 2 weeks
Join us for this fantastic two-week course and discover the basic techniques of gel printing and book binding.
Alongside, our friendly facilitators, James and Wendy we will experiment with layered and mono printing methods using a gel plate to create our own unique prints. Once we have a variety of prints, they will be used to make a small book using the Japanese book binding method. This can be used as a notebook for writing positive affirmations, or as inspiration for doodles! You can also just keep it as a “coffee table” style book that you flick through to remind you of your achievements. No previous experience is necessary and all materials provided.
This course is for unpaid carers living in Kirklees.
Printed Pages: Gel Printing & Book Making for Carers
A Gift To Yourself
Project Colt, Elland, Halifax, Bridgefield Mills, Elland Bridge, Elland, Halifax HX5 0SQ – Tuesday 14 January 2025 10am-12-pm 4 weeks
Come and join us for some creative sessions where you will be able to make some lovely items that can be used as gifts to yourself and others. This will include making your own bath-bombs, tea-light holders, lavender bags, and coasters.
Please note, this venue is in a converted mill, the building is in the process of being improved so that it is more accessible. In the meantime, if you struggle to climb stairs please get in touch as soon as you can and we will endeavour to put adjustments in place. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause and we thank you for your patience. If you would like any further information, please get in touch.

Other Community Offers
For people spending Christmas alone..
Jubilee Centre – Paddock
Anyone who would be spending Christmas alone or who doesn’t have enough money for a decent meal is invited to attend The Jubilee Centre’s Christmas Day meal and celebration.
There will be transport provided to the Market Street centre (HD1 4SH) if needed, plus a three course meal, games, singing and a present from Santa – all between 1pm and 3pm.
Volunteers can help set up on Christmas Eve between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, drive guests on Christmas Day or help out serving food and clearing up after the meal.

Denby Dale Centre Christmas Day – Emley
The Denby Dale Centre are a charity that aim to reduce loneliness and isolation for older people.
Their Christmas Day lunch and celebrations will be held at Emley Community Centre on Upper Lane (HD8 9RE) this year from 11am to 4pm.
Anyone is welcome and transport can be provided but a place must be booked at least a week before Christmas by calling 01484 860077.
There will be a games, presents, a large lunch and time for a quick nap after – a proper family Christmas Day.
Longcauseway Church – Dewsbury
If you are struggling to make ends meet for whatever reason you can pop in to the Longcauseway Church opposite the Town Hall (WF13 1NH) on Christmas Day for a free dinner.
Book your place for the 3pm meal by popping in to the church on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday morning. Alternatively, call 07979 032910.
Families are welcome and transport may be provided by arrangement.
The Gathering Place – Halifax
The Gathering Place at 1 St James Road in Halifax town centre (HX1 1YS) functions as a food bank, a homeless shelter and a cafe throughout the year.
For the past few years they have opened their doors on Christmas Day to provide a free dinner for anyone that would be spending the day alone.
All ages are welcome to the event that starts at 12.30pm and lasts around an hour and a half.
No booking is required but for more information call Louise on 01422 647390.

Waythrough – Peer Support What’s On! January – March 2025
These activities are open to everyone aged 18 or over who lives in Kirklees and experiences mental
health issues, problems, or concerns. You do not need to be seeing an employment advisor to join.
Simply call the number below and ask for Karl Jackson-Lander, the Peer Support
Coordinator, who will assist you to fill out a short referral form so you can attend.

A four-day course supporting your wellbeing during the cost of living crisis. Work with our tutors to explore and share techniques to live well and save money.
Friday 17th to Friday 31st January:
LAB Project
(Induction + 10 days, 10am-4pm)
Boost your confidence, employability skills, teamworking and facilitation skills in this two-week course and gain a Level 1 in Progression. Our flagship course which has supported thousands of people to plan their next steps into employment, volunteering or feeling more involved in their community.
Progression Event: Thursday 30th January (10am to 12noon) Your organisation’s opportunity to connect with a group of learners ready to progress. Whether you offer employment support and advice, volunteering opportunities, or activities in the community, we would love to hear from you! – Let me know if you’re interested in coming along!

Must have the right to live and work in the UK (or have been a resident for a minimum of 6 months)

For LAB: Must be unemployed, low earning, seeking work, retired, off sick or economically inactive and must be over the age of 19 (born on or before 31/08/2005)

Like a foodbank but for mobile data, the National Databank provides free mobile SIM cards for people who can’t access the internet. It is run by the Good Things Foundation but is partnered with O2.
