Weekly Update
Welcome to the Weekly Update. Our courses are co-designed and co-facilitated by people with a lived experience of mental and/or physical health needs. Sometimes we have to learn to live with challenges, so the focus of our courses is not necessarily on getting better from illness or health difficulties but on rebuilding a life of value and worth.
Our College is a place you can be in control of putting the pieces of your life back into the right places and sometimes, as we know from doing any puzzle, that can be trial and error! Why not read some of our learners’ stories here and be inspired to create your own:

Are you a music lover? Would you like to meet new people and collaborate in a creative setting with others? Have you ever fancied having a go at writing your own song? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the course for you!
In this free 6-week course we will explore the basics of song writing and you will have the opportunity to create and play music in a group setting.
Window Walk-Mount Tabor – Halloween!

Come and join us for a wellbeing walk around Mount Tabor led by Jess from Creative Minds. The local community are decorating their windows and gardens for Halloween. We will be doing a gentle walk that gives a lovely tour of the area, you will have the chance to see some fabulous window and garden displays.
Please Note: The Window Walk is approximately 4 miles, with some steep hills and it will involve walking in the road in some places.
You will be asked to complete a short physical health questionnaire before being booked onto the course. This must be completed before you attend so any support needs or concerns regarding your physical health can be discussed with the facilitator.

Moving into Mindfulness

Join Peer Worker, Laura for this insightful course where together we will explore the essence of mindfulness. We will discover different ways of practicing mindfulness and consider the science of this practice and the positive impact it can have on our brain alleviating symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.
When we learn how to live in the present moment, we can let go of stress and find peace and relaxation.

This brand-new course has been inspired by our popular and well received Mindful Doodles course. You will have the opportunity to create a collection of simple handmade seasonal crafts like gift wrap, tags, cards and gift boxes filled with colourful patterns. No previous drawing experience is required and as always will be delivered in a gentle, friendly environment.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing

Join us for this fab two-week course where, with the help and support of friendly facilitator, Karl from the Richmond Fellowship we will explore all aspects of improving and maintaining our sense of wellbeing. Together we will discover practical ways to enhance our mood which can be used on a daily basis to help us feel well. We will learn about all the different ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ and how these can be incorporated into our lives.
Managing Depression

This learning seminar aims to help you understand depression, how it affects you and how you can start to feel better. Designed and facilitated by two friendly psychological wellbeing practitioners from Kirklees Talking Therapies service alongside a Recovery College volunteer with lived experience of depression, the learning seminar provides tips and techniques for lifting your mood and breaking the vicious cycle of depression.

Do you have a favourite place where you like to spend time? Where you feel comfortable and relaxed? It could be a holiday destination, the town you grew up in, or even a dream location!
Join our friendly and experienced facilitator, James, for this brand new course. We will each design our own travel stamps – like the ones you would see on old suitcases – before transferring our designs onto lino to create prints.
All materials will be provided.

Engaging in arts and crafts can be a great way to improve our sense of wellbeing and, with the busy festive season ahead, this one-off winter workshop is a great opportunity to focus on a simple activity and forget about our worries for a while. Alongside, our wonderful Creative Practitioner, Sara using everyday items we will learn how to make gift bags which are great for unusual shaped gifts and add a personal touch, while also saving money. No previous experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome.
Weaving Workshop: God’s Eye

Join us for this wonderful creative workshop, where together we will learn simple weaving techniques using yarn to create a colourful, spiritual object called a ‘God’s Eye’ to decorate your home or garden. This one-off session delivered by Sara, our fab Creative Practitioner is a great introduction to weaving and an opportunity to meet other learners in a safe, friendly and informal setting. All materials provided and no previous experience is necessary.

Mental health – carers’ group – Laura Mitchell Health and Wellbeing Centre
Third Tuesday of every month, 6 – 8pm – (meet in rear car park)
Come along to our carers’ group to share your experiences and views, get support, and learn about medication and mental health. Meet new people, see how we can help you and find out more about our services.

Creative Writing for wellbeing, Huddersfield (various dates)
Writing is a great way for us to express our thoughts and feelings, and relieve tension or stress. No writing experience is needed to join this free weekly group activity, just a pen and some paper.

Culture Lab: Shaping the Future Together – Batley
Kirklees Council invites residents to actively participate in shaping the future of the borough’s cultural landscape through the Culture Lab, a community engagement project piloting in Holmfirth and Batley in October 2024. Each drop-in session will feature interactive workshops, open discussions, and creative activities, providing an opportunity for local residents to express their thoughts on the cultural offer in their area.

Kirklees Success Centre – My Next Step – learning programme
Kirklees Success Centre are offering ‘My Next Step’ a 12-hour group learning programme that includes group activities and discussions which will help you explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and wellness as you pre-pare for next step towards employment. The sessions are completely judgement free, delivered by experienced and friendly tutors.
To be eligible for this FREE course you need to be over 16 years of age, not be in work, experiencing a health-related barrier, and have the right to work in the UK. If you would like to find out more about their course please contact: successcentre@kirklees.gov.uk or call 01484 234153
Skills Connect Care with Confidence Courses, delivered by Octavia Learning
The Care with Confidence course is a two-day mentoring and coaching course for staff or volunteers in the health and social care/voluntary sectors who have buddying/supervising/managing responsibilities as part of their role.
Calderdale dates for this course:
Wednesday 6th Nov and Wednesday 20th Nov (10am-3pm both days)
To be eligible for this FREE training, you are required to be at least 19 years old, have a West Yorkshire residential address, have the Right to Work in the UK, and have not attended a Skills Connect funded course previously.
You also need to be available for both dates.
