The Five Ways to Wellbeing

Ever heard about the Five Ways to Wellbeing?  Well, evidence suggests that we can improve our mental health and wellbeing, feel more positive and able to get more out of life by following these five steps: Connecting with Others, Being Active, Learning, Giving and Taking Notice.  One of our RWC Co-ordinators, Rachel tells us why she reflected on these steps recently……

“I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t get up every day thinking about all the things that I should perhaps incorporate into my life to make me feel – well, like me! But something made me reflect on these steps recently….

I started some environmental volunteering in December (after talking about it for about two years!) and have spent a few hours out planting trees – well saplings to be precise. I’ll be honest, I haven’t felt great for the last couple of months.  I’ve lost my mojo.  I’ve been sad. Yet, the simple act of planting a few trees made me feel AMAZING and really lifted my spirits. It got me wondering, what is it about this activity that put such a spring in my step?

Upon reflection I realised that firstly I’m connecting with others; a group of lovely volunteers with a common interest.  Secondly, I’m physically active; digging holes, however small is a great workout!  Thirdly, I’m learning from the friendly, patient Rangers about all the different varieties of trees, land management and local wildlife.  I am also giving something back to the community and, hopefully improving the local area.  Finally, I’m taking notice; it turns out tree planting is rather a wonderful and mindful experience.  So, with one single activity I am fulfilling all the steps of the Five Ways to Wellbeing.  Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised then that I want to bottle that feeling of pure joy and contentment after each session!”

If you want to experience a similar feeling why not check out volunteering opportunities local to you?
