October 3, 2024

Welcome to the Weekly Update. Next Thursday 10th October is World Mental Health Day (WMHD). Talking about our mental health can help us cope better with life’s ups and downs. So, on World Mental Health Day why not check in with a friend, family member or a work pal? And why not do it anyway all year round? Don’t forget we are marking WMHD with our Harvest Your Potential event at Mirfield Community Centre from 10am-1pm (see details below).

If you haven’t already read our Keeping Connected newsletter  you can still read it here- click on the link below. You can find out about your brand-new learner portal, get recommendations for podcasts to help improve health and wellbeing and read articles from our learners, peer workers and friends of the College.

Wednesday 16th October 10am-12pm (1 week)

Join us for this wonderful creative workshop, where together we will learn simple weaving techniques using yarn to create a colourful, spiritual object called a ‘God’s Eye’ to decorate your home or garden. The four points are thought to represent earth, fire, air, and water, and the centre provided God’s watchful eye over their people. This one-off session delivered by Sara, our fab Creative Practitioner is a great introduction to weaving and an opportunity to meet other learners in a safe, friendly and informal setting.  All materials provided and no previous experience is necessary.

History In Action in association with Bent Architect proudly present:

Champion Jack of the Ovenden Delta – A mixed-media performance celebrating the legendary blues man’s years in Halifax!

During the 1960’s, Champion Jack and his American station wagon were a familiar, if unusual, sight around Ovenden and Halifax. Jack had met and married a local girl, Shirley, and their Ovenden home became the base from which he continued touring. He worked with greats such as John Lee Hooker, BB King and Eric Clapton, all of whom stayed over after gigs to keep the party going and if they were lucky, Jack would cook up some of his favourite New Orleans food.

So please come and join us for a powerful and heartfelt mixed media performance as we celebrate of one of Halifax’s most mercurial and fascinating characters through his rich and soulful blues music, his own words, film, live action and oral testimony from his family, friends and those who remember and loved the one and only Champion Jack Dupree.
